Guangzhou to build the tallest building in the world

The 610-meter-tall Guangzhou TV tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world, is expected to open next year and will be the most popular scenic spot in Guangzhou.

Covering about 84,000 square meters, the willowy shaped tower includes a 454-meters-long body and a 156-meter-long aerial on top. 2.2 billion RMB (324 million USD) went to the project and a total of 55,000 tons of steel was used on the tower. The unique design of the architecture and the expensive cost of the project aroused the attention from all over the world.

Here are some comments from both foreign media and Chinese media:

Foreign Media

New Straits Times (an English-language newspaper published in Malaysia)

The Guangzhou TV Tower is one of the most scrutinized high-rise buildings in the world. More than 600 sensors testing everything from vibrations to temperature are embedded in the steel columns and the concrete core. The sensors not only safeguard the tower, but also furnish valuable data for building the super-towers of tomorrow.

The structure consist of a open lattice-structure that is twisted over it's axis, therefore creating a tightening waist halfway up the building. The design of the lattice-grid is not only a structural one but is also driven by esthetic and architectural and environmental considerations.

Chinese Media

Shanghai Daily

The tower is strong enough to resist a magnitude-8 earthquake and typhoons that might occur once every 100 years. High speed elevators will carry visitors to the top floor in 90 seconds.

China Daily

Chen Wangqiang, from the Guangzhou Association of Architecture, said the new TV tower is worth building, "It will help further raise Guangzhou's standing at home and abroad and help promote the city's tourism in the years to come."
