Longest annular solar eclipse in millennium to cross China
This afternoon, an annular solar eclipse will occur in the central path, then continues into Asia through the extreme southern part of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and China.
It will be the millennium's longest annular solar eclipse with a record 11 minutes and 8 seconds, an eclipse lasting longer than this one won't happen until 3043.
Though Xiamen is not in the central path, the public can see the partial eclipse.
The eclipse will begin at 15:30pm, reach its maximum at 16:56pm, and end around 18:04pm Beijing time, when the sun and the moon descend below the horizon in succession.
According to the weather forecast, the weather in Xiamen today will be partly cloudy, very good to see the eclipse.
People should not watch the eclipse with their naked eye. It's better to take precautionary measures while watching the celestial activity, the observatory said.
