Video games may hinder learning for boys
It is necessary for kids to relax themselves, but a new study suggests video games could actually hinder the learning process, at least for young boys, as media reported quoting a new study Tuesday.
Robert Weis, a psychologist at Denison University in Ohio, studied 64 young boys aged from 6 to 9 and found that boys given a video game were slower to progress in their reading and writing skills.
However, it doesn't mean that parents should discard their children's game system.
"There's nothing evil about video games," said Robert Weis. "It's just that we need to monitor kids' usage of these games and to urge moderation in the amount that kids play these games."
In addition, those children who feel frustrated in school anyway tend to play video games rather than to do homework. This leads to even more problems with falling behind in school, creating a vicious circle.
Anyway, researchers agree that more studies are needed to determine if the findings apply over the long-term. But, meanwhile, they are encouraging parents to provide children with a variety of after-school activities, limiting video game and TV time.
