Chongqing encourages college students to live with peasants
Chongqing will launch several activities focusing on college students, such as paid internships, planting trees, farm education, industrial production education, military affairs education and social science research, to ensure that the more than 700,000 college students in Chongqing are able to participate in social practice for no less than four months and provide a social practice platform for college students.
The purpose of the social practice activities for college students is mainly to help college students to understand the national conditions, the city conditions and the public feelings, and cultivate the constructors and successors of the community, said Tu Jingping, deputy secretary-general of the Chongqing Municipal Government.
Tu summarized the specific content of the activities as "six-one," which means that every college will be able to have a college forest if every college student participates in the tree-planting activity; college students will be able to practice in the countryside with pay for one month; college students will go to the grassroots areas, the villages and the homes of peasants to eat, live and work with the peasant household for one month; college students will work in rural enterprises for one month; college students will learn about military affairs for one month and they are also required to write valuable social research reports.
Zhao Weiliang, vice director of the Chongqing Municipal Education Commission, introduced the activities that have been launched recently. In August 2010, a total of 35 departments directly under the municipal authority and 36 state-owned enterprises offered a total of 5,000 posts for college students. All the students benefited much from the practice.
Zhao said that the six practical activities primarily aim at advocating active participation among college students. Therefore, college students are not forced to participate in the activities, and it will not be linked with the students' academic credits. It will also not be a requirement for college students to obtain their diplomas.
