Students ignore the campus counseling

Despite many universities in Jiangsu Province providing psychological counseling centers, some are failing to reach students who might be in need of the facilities, as reported by Xinhua Daily last Tuesday.

"We have set up 24-hour counseling centers at each of the eight campuses of Yangzhou University. However, comparing with the total 40,000 students at the university, very few have come for psychological counseling, less than 10 a week," said Liu Zhengrong, a teacher working at a Yangzhou University counseling center as quoted in the Xinhua Daily report.

However, not all schools are reporting inability to reach students with the help they need, in part due to extensive student outreach campaigning.

Xia Cuicui, a psychological counselor in the Psychological Health Center at Beijing Normal University, said that each of the three counselors working at the center see 3–4 students a day, sometimes having to line up for a session.

Xia pointed out that the situation in Jiangsu is not an isolated case, as many schools do not properly inform students that such facilities are available on campus.

"After I had visited other universities in Beijing, I found some students didn't even know where their counseling center was."

According to Xia, the reasons for the center failing to reach students are more complex than just lack of information.

"Most often students are reluctant to visit the centers because they have concerns about the confidentiality of their visit, and news travels fast on campus," Xia said.

"Every time a student enters counseling at our center, the counselor sign a confidentiality agreement so that he can confide to us without any anxiety," she added.

In order to encourage students in need to take advantage of counseling centers, Xia suggested that it is the responsibility of the university to improve its student outreach.

"Active campaigns should be informing students that such centers exist, that it there is nothing strange or shameful about going to them, as well as the importance of seeking help when having problems," Xia said.
