PKU Student’s Article Published on UPI
Peking University, Beijing, May 10, 2010: A feature article titled "China should increase currency flexibility, adviser says" was published on UPI's website on May 3rd. The article, written by Yi Jie, a junior from the School of Journalism and Communication, was a writing exercise for the English News-writing class. This was the first time a PKU undergraduate's own piece of writing has reached millions of readers through UPI's website, distinguished as the second largest new agency in the world with over 3 millions page views per day. The Executive Chief Editor of UPI congratulated Yi Jie saying, now you have 3,700,000 readers around the world! On receiving the acceptance of her article, Yi was extraordinarily excited, "It is amazing! I have never dreamt that my work could make its way to UPI."
The student's talent was recognized thanks to the innovation in the teaching method in English News Writing course provided by Professor Li Kun. With the cooperation of UPIU(United Press International for Universities), students were given two on-line lectures on writing news in English and were assigned to practice after class. Their exercises were then uploaded on UPIU.com and received comments from experienced UPI journalists. Krista Kapralo, one of the top journalists in UPI commented, "The subject of the article is the exchange rate of RMB, a professional issue in economics. The author showed her crafts in weaving the news, the background and the analysis into an in-depth report".
The article named "A new institution of Beijing slum" written by Quan Xixi and the report "Auto Show: Made in China, sold in China" by Yun-Hsien Chang were also acclaimed by Krista Kapralo.
UPIU is an on-line community for scholars, students and the future media men to communicate. Registers can upload their articles, pictures, audios or videos on the website to share their ideas and experiences with students and faculty in media from all over the world. They also have the opportunity to receive comments from the top editors in UPI. UPI sometimes selects outstanding pieces for publication.
