Student from SITS Places First in Southeastern Division of Interpreting Competition
May 6 - April 30th, the Southeastern Division Competition of the Second "Cross-Straits Interpretation Competition" was held in Jinan University. The stage was graced by 48 students talented in interpreting from more than ten universities in Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi. Hong Miao and Xia Zhimeng, postgraduates from the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies, took part in the competition representing GDUFS. After three rounds of heated competition, Xia Zhimeng was honored with first prize for her outstanding performance; Hong Miao, with her excellent interpreting ability, won second prize.
There were all together three rounds: dialogue interpreting, conference interpreting and comprehensive quality. Topics covered environmental protection, Chinese culture, higher education, diplomacy, American and British culture. It was an inclusive test of language skills, interpreting level, mental quality and comprehensive ability. Our two representatives conducted themselves calmly and with poise in the face of challenge, showing the benefits of majoring in interpreting.
Finally, Xia Zhimeng seized the chance to go to the Mainland Division Final. Song Lin from GDUFS School of English Language and Culture and Ge Li from Zhongshan University were the other two first prize winners. Together, they will compete for the winner of Mainland Division in Xiamen University in mid May. Those who stand out will go to Taiwan for the grand final.
