China's national organizations for youth and students hold congress
BEIJING, Aug. 24 -- The national congress of the All-China Youth Federation (ACYF) and that of the All-China Students' Federation (ACSF) opened here Tuesday.
Chinese President Hu Jintao sent a letter to congratulate the opening of the congress.
Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, addressed the opening ceremony of the first plenum of the ACYF's 11th National Committee and the ACSF's 25th National Congress.
About 2,000 delegates present at the 3-day congress will revise their constitutions and reshuffle their leading bodies.
Delegates include 1,405 members from the ACYF, young people from all walks of life, and 602 members from the ACSF, middle school and college students from across China.
Founded on May 4, 1949, the ACYF safeguards the legitimate rights of Chinese young people and helps them to join social activities, including volunteer programs to assist the poor.
The 91-year-old ACSF leads the nation's 100,000 students' unions involving more than 80 million college and middle school students.
