Chinese Calligraphy Class

Lexington, KY, USA—On Nov. 7, students of a Chinese calligraphy class offered by Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky (UKCI) were making their “calligraphy products”.

This was their last session of the calligraphy class. This class began on Oct. 3.Participants learned the art and history of calligraphy while doing hands-on practice.

No prior knowledge of Chinese or of Chinese calligraphy was required and UKCI provided all the materials. All participants learned to write some distinctive Chinese characters, such as: “Fu”(meaning “fortune”), Chinese idioms such as “Ma Dao Cheng Gong”(meaning “to win instant success”), and a Chinese poem. They show strong interests in Chinese calligraphy and Chinese culture. They took home their own brush work after each session of the course.

The course was taught by Jane Ji from Shanghai, China. She is good at Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, and Chinese traditional handcraft. Jane’s approach to calligraphy is distinctive in that she interprets the traditional Chinese brush work from the perspective of western esthetics. Her teaching style is popular among students.
