Santa Claus is Coming to Town

On the evening of 8 December, Coundon Court School held its annual Christmas Concert and this year a group of around 15 pupils and 5 teachers took to the stage to perform a Chinese version of‘Santa Claus is coming to town.’ The performance, which stood out on the otherwise all-English programme, was enjoyed and applauded by an audience of pupils, staff, parents and friends. The Year 7 pupils have only started learning Mandarin in the last few months and were very brave to take on the challenge of singing in a language that is very new to them.

Coundon Court School was set up in 1953. It introduced Mandarin for the first time this year. It is taught by local Mandarin teacher Jodie Gardiner. Jodie Gardiner spent a year studying at Nanjing University as part of her degree in Chinese Studies and during that time developed a love of China and the Chinese language. She hopes to open her pupils’ eyes to China and Chinese culture through teaching Mandarin. Coundon Court School is also working with the SSAT Confucius Classroom at Finham Park School and has recently welcomed Hanban teacher Liu Yang. The performance at the Christmas Concert was a chance to celebrate the successful introduction of Mandarin and Liu Yang’s arrival at the school. Coundon Court School plans to develop its Mandarin provision and teaching of China in other subject areas.

Santa Claus is coming to town and China is definitely coming to Coundon Court!
