Chinese couplets, Fu characters and red lanterns at rTrail created an atmosphere of the Chinese Spring Festival. Famous Chinese paintings, traditional music and tea sets made the mini exhibition all the more Chinese.
The CIVU and rTrail Collective Edge took the opportunity of the Spring Festival to give demonstrations of Chinese culture.
There were altogether 12 events held in rTrail from January 15 to February 19, including calligraphy, paper-cutting, Chinese music, seal making, Chinese knot making, Confucian Analects reading and the art of tea ceremony.
The highlight of this series of events was the live demonstration and the hands-on opportunities for the guests. The presenters are ZHANG Haoyang (Calligraphy), JING Jing (Calligraphy) and YANG Peilin (Seal making), who were all Chinese graduate students from Valparaiso University, Dr. LIU Jiangang，Associate Director (Reading Analects of Confucius), MIANG Liang and ZHANG Rong (Paper-cutting and Chinese knot making) from the Confucius Institute, and CHEN Yang (Playing the Yangqin), a visiting music teacher from Zhejiang University of Technology, VU’s partner school.
Making their own names on the Xuan Paper or a seal in Chinese characters, weaving a Chinese knot with their best wishes, finding an unexpected pattern upon unfolding a piece of red paper, playing a piece of Chinese music, sipping the aromatic tea---all these activities attracted guests.
Jenna Odenthal, a journalist from Post Tribune, reported this event. She quoted Brenda Erickson, the owner and founder of rTrail Collective Edge, as saying: “I am outwardly expressing my appreciation of the Chinese culture. That’s important to me. There’s value there. Forget the divide and build a common experience.” 1
The series of cultural demonstration not only helped American friends to have a better understanding of the Spring Festival and Chinese culture, it also showed the versatility and deep love of the traditional art of the Chinese young generation.
