Chinese Workshop at Abbotswell Primary School, England

At Abbotswell Primary School, Harlow Town, Essex, pupils in Year 5 were hard at work designing their Chinese New Year presents - three-dimensional Dragon Heads over the course of five classes spanning a month and a half.

Abbotswell Primary School is part of the SSAT Confucius Institute, which has offered Chinese lessons for one and a half years. During New Year, they had including study of Chinese New Year, the Great Wall of China, and the current Chinese animal year. The students enjoyed watching a performance celebrating the New Year and were very excited at the prospect of designing a Chinese dragon's head using basic household items, which would otherwise go to waste.

During the design process the students learnt about the significance of the dragon in Chinese culture and people's daily life, as well as the different traditional festivals linked with the dragon, such as the dragon dance in the Spring Festival and the Dragon Boating Day. When the students had completed the three-dimensional dragon's head, they had been visited Harlow Town Civil Centre in order to share our joyous and Chinese culture.

The upcoming Chinese Spring Festival Workshop will help provide students from Abbotswell School with skills in martial arts, paper-cutting and calligraphy, all of which help develop a good basic understanding of Chinese culture and language to foreign students.
