On April 2, 2011, the Confucius Institute at UT Dallas in USA held successfully the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Chinese Proficiency Competition for DFW college and secondary school students in the performance hall. The contestants from the universities and secondary schools in DFW area contested fiercely and friendly here. Marisa M. Salatino from the Hockaday School won the first prize with absolute superiority in the group of secondary school. Benjamin Simmons from the University of North Texas (UNT) won the first prize in the college group. They will be recommended by the Confucius Institute at UT Dallas to take part in the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Chinese Proficiency Competition for American Southern part to be held by Chinese Consulate General in Houston on April 24.
The competition began at 9:30. The contestants are vigorous and parents accompany them, just the same as to take part in the grand festival ceremony. Dr. Gu Mingding, the director of the Confucius Institute, made an opening speech and Professor Dennis Kratz, the dean of the School of Art and Humanities at UTD, were present to congratulate to the competition. Specially invited five-member judge group are Mr. Shao Xiaoming, the director of Dallas Modern Chinese Language School, Mr. Johann Tse, the consulate of the Confucius Institute at UT Dallas and singer, Ms. Chen Xinsehng, from Modern Chinese Lauguage School with 50 years of Chinese teaching experience, Professor Tian Xiangbin, the co-director of the Confucius Institute and Professor Tian Yazhou, the vice dean of the College of Performance and Fine Arts at China Three Gorges University. The competition was divided into three parts such as Chinese speech, talent show, and Q/A Chinese cultural knowledge. The first, second, third, and honorable mention awards are set up for all the contestants and 4 single awards of the Best Style, the Best Speech, the Most Creative, and the Best Performance for the secondary school students.

In the secondary school group, the youngest contestants came from the Confucius Classrooms at Coppell Middle School East, North and West who have learnt Chinese only more than one semester. Their uncommon performance showed the ability to make further advances. Joseph T. Scholz from Coppell Middle School East sang the Chinese song Yijianmei accompanied with piano by himself obtained warm applause and won the Best Style award and individual third prize. High school students showed their strong Chinese basis, clear pronunciation, and fluent expression let the competition to a climax. Elisabeth Cathcart’s three tongue twisters, funny and accurate, were highly admired by the present audience and she won the Most Creative award and individual second prize; Esther Burnett’s fluent speech and the piano solo Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai won the Best Performance and individual second prize; The fair maiden style Marisa Salatino in Chinese cheongsams made the competition to peak. The perfect speech, quick and accurate answer to the questions on Chinese culture knowledge, and the Chinese song The Moon Represents My Heart and violin solo in turn got prolonged applause. She won the individual first prize and the Best Speech award.
Eric Obodo, the contestant from the University of Texas at Dallas told the plain but humorous story during his study with the Confucius institute scholarship for half a year in China. He won the second prize of college level. Students from The University of North Texas won the first prize for his influent speech and the skillful tea-making performance.

2 winners of first prize, 3 of second prize, and 5 of third prize were awarded scholarships with trophy and certificate. 4 winners of single prize were awarded trophy and certificate. 9 winners with honorable mention obtained the certificates and souvenirs. The contestants gave their performance during the break before closing ceremony. The instructors and the parents had close communication with each other in a harmonious atmosphere. The whole competition was arranged by the assistant director Yang Xiaohong. The preparation lasted nearly four months and the competition reached a conclusion successfully on April, 2.
