Charming Tangram, Beautiful China!

An interesting Chinese Tangram Competition was held at the Confucius Classroom at the King’s School Grantham, Lincolnshire In July, 2011. The China Club of the Confucius Classroom is one of the students’ favourite places to be and it is open to all students. Many interesting projects, such as Chinese Kung Fu, Chinese tea culture, traditional festivals, folk arts and Chinese history, have been done at the China club. Today’s theme was Chinese Tangram “Qi Qiao Ban”--a Chinese traditional puzzle. Firstly Ms Hu introduced the ancient Chinese puzzle and the many different ways it can be played.

What is Chinese Tangram

The boys listened carefully and learned to cut their own Tangram out of a piece of square card. Then, the boys were divided into several groups to compete in a set time. Whether they won or lost, everyone enjoyed themselves very much. The boys really enjoyed being creative.

Who is the quickest?

The one-hour China club came to end, but the students were reluctant to leave so soon. When Ms Hu asked them to leave their creative Tangram works as a sample for other to learn from, nobody wanted to do so. Instead, some boys asked, “Shall we play with Tangram again next time?” Another boy’s words really gave her a surprise, “Confucius Classroom is my favourite place in the School!” The children were happy to have made their own Chinese map with tangram!

Since the Confucius Classroom at the King’s School opened, the students have learnt many important things about Chinese culture, learnt to speak Mandarin, and to write Chinese characters. One of their favorite parts of the session is during the final 10 minutes when the students are allowed to choose from their preferred activities, such as, talking on the internet with Chinese friends through QQ, practicing Chinese calligraphy, playing some computer games for learning Mandarin, or playing Tai Ji Fan, etc.
