Trational Chinese Culture Warmly welcomed in Queen’s School
With the coming of the summer term, the Confucius classroom of the Queen’s School continues its colourful Culture Club with a wide variety of exciting extra-curricular activities.
On a Wednesday afternoon girls can learn how to make Chinese knots in the Confucius classroom with Hanban teacher Qingjiang Chen. Chinese knot-making is a traditional folk art, linked with good luck in China. The girls are learning the culture of Chinese weaving as well as appreciating the beauty of the knots. The girls have been shown that the shapes of the knots have different meanings relating to Chinese people, history and culture. Some of the girls have been giving knots to their friends as presents.

Learning Panchang Knot
Girls who are interested in Chinese traditional dance attend the Chinese Dance Club on a Friday noon to learn Fan dancing. The Chinese Fan Dance dates from 2,000 years ago, is native to the Korean ethnic minority group in China and has become one of the Chinese people’s favourite dances. The Chinese Fan Dance highlights delicate movements with constantly changing rhythm - truly dynamic and graceful. It is a popular form of art performed in ceremonies and celebrations.

”I love Fan dancing, it’s really fun, really hard work, but it’s great.” Zoe Thornton-Reid said.
From Autumn term 2011 to now, the Confucius classroom of the Queen’s School has opened four Chinese culture clubs, they are, Dai dance, Abacus, Fan dance and Chinese knot. Many students were attracted by these colourful clubs, and the mandarin students got a clearer impression of traditional Chinese culture.
