An Excited just ended 3rd MBBS Students Medical Seminar
The third edition of the foreign students’ medical seminar which was organized by the Overseas Education College (OEC) took place on Sunday 20th May, 2012, at the OEC main conference room. The program started at 2: 00 pm with a brief introduction by Mr. Samuel Essien, a PhD student who happened to be the host for the program.
Present at the seminar was the Dean of OEC, some Professors from the School of Medical Sciences, staff of OEC, all foreign students and other invited guests. The various topics presented for the day included the following: Alcohol & Tobacco Foods Related Diseases, Xenotransplantation: Is There A Future; Prevention Of Infant Hiv Infection By Antiretroviral Treatment; Alzheimer’s: The Modern Home Wrecker; Hepatitis B And Pregnancy Outcome; Current Trends In Leukemia Diagnosis And Treatment; Stem Cell:A Promise For The Future; and Advances In Gene Technology And Related Issues. The presentation was mainly started by the principal speakers for different groups and later on joined by their colleagues on stage during the response to questions session.
The level of delivery was of high quality, educative and very down to earth. The participants were well composed, articulate and demonstrated in-depth knowledge about their respective topics. This was even more evident in the question and answer time. Our most cherish audience also contributed immensely towards the above topics, especially the honorable judges from the Medical School and some postgraduates. It was all about an atmosphere of academic excellence with everybody contributing his/her quota for the success of the health program.
At the end of the presentations, there were a lot of wonderful comments from the judges in which they congratulated the presenters and encouraged them to make good use of their basic knowledge in medicine, especially physiology. Finally, the Dean of the OEC also came in to offer some thought-provoking suggestions to the participants to improve upon their future presentations. Her advice was geared towards encouraging the students to narrow down their selected topics so that they can give a much better in-depth medical knowledge to the audience.
In the Dean’s closing remarks, she was very pleased and excited about such high level of performance, and full of praise for the participants, challenging them to keep the fire burning. She further entreated the entire medical student body to learn very hard in order to become not only successful physicians but also top world class physician scientists.
As one of the main speakers for the day, I was so glad to be part of the seminar and more importantly, presenting on behalf of my group. It is my heart desire that this academic exercise would be a regular semester/academic calendar activity not only for the medical students but also others in different fields of study. This is very important because the seminar really broadens my scope of medical-based knowledge and made me aware of the challenges ahead in life. I will forever be indebted to the organizers of this program and also all those who helped in diverse ways to make the health seminar a success. Indeed, we all appreciated it and strongly believe that next time it would be a great masterpiece. I love you all and best wishes.
