2009 Foreign Languages Culture Festival opens in Renmin University of China

RUC held the “2009 Foreign Languages Culture Festival” Opening Ceremony at Run Run Shaw Hall on Oct. 21st, 2009. Prof. Chen Yulu, Vice-President of Renmin University, Prof. Hu Zhuanglin, PhD Supervisor at School of Foreign Languages of Peking University, Prof. He Qixin, Dean of RUC School of Foreign Languages, Prof. Zhang Weiping, Deputy Dean of RUC School of Foreign Languages, Prof. Hong Dayong, Director of RUC Academic Affairs Office, and some Chinese and international teachers from the Department of English, German, Japanese, French and Russian at RUC School of Foreign Languages, attended the opening ceremony.

 

 

 

RUC Vice-President Prof. Chen Yulu delivered a congratulatory address at the opening ceremony and highly praised that the festival would surely play an active influence on the cultural exchanges and students’ language learning. Prof. Hong Dayong, Director of RUC Academic Affairs Office, and Prof. Zhang Yongxian, Senior Deputy Dean of RUC School of Foreign Languages, addressed respectively.

 

Prof. Hu Zhuanglin, PhD Supervisor at School of Foreign Languages of Peking University, gave a speech titled “Foreign Languages and Culture” stating his unique perspective of understanding “what is culture”, “the relation between language and culture”, “the relation between foreign languages and culture”, as well as “how to improve foreign language ability and widen international knowledge”.

 

 

 

RUC students performed many wonderful shows on the opening ceremony. Students from Department of German sang the “Andie Freude” by German famous poet Schiller; students from Department of Japanese performed a traditional Japanese dance named “Awa odori”; students from Department of English read the “My Road to English and American Literature”; students from Department of French sang the “Un roman d’amitié”; and students from Department of Russian sang the “Под Московные вечера”. All the wonderful shows received ardent applauses by the audience.

 

 

 

Initiated by RUC Academic Affairs Office and School of Foreign Languages, “2009 Foreign Languages Culture Festival” lasted one week. During the festival, various activities were held, such as lectures, introduction to world well-known universities, language contests, and movie shows so as to enlarge RUC students’ international view, increase the interactive between language and culture, and build a dynamic academic atmosphere on campus.
