The Second Phase China’s Urban Consumer Price Index Released

The Second Phase China’s Urban Consumer Price Index worked out by the research group on consumer behavior of AntaiCollegeof Economics & Management was officially released on November 12. The index shows that Chinese consumers’ feeling of happiness in the third quarter has the rise compared with the preceding quarter.

The China’s Urban Consumer Price Index is released every quarter, and is designed to reveal the consuming mentality changes and expectations for future economic trends of China’s urban consumers. Phase II index show that the confidence index of the national urban consumers in the third quarter of 2009 remained stable and consumers’confidence in the economy has increased slightly compared with the previous quarter. China’s urban consumer expectations index rose steadily, so did the happiness index. The economic policy experience holds stability. Inflationary pressures are gradually formed, with the declining car-purchase and house-purchase intention.

The consumer happiness index of this phase rises from 129 points of the second quarter to 139 points. Professional technicians, students, retired staff, government employees, and private owners have the higher happiness index. Experts of the research group hold that as the economic situation improved, the rise in the expectations for employment and income allows consumers to become optimistic about the future, which results in the increase of life satisfaction and the feeling of happiness. In addition, China’s consumers are more susceptible to the impact of public opinion, and their personal well-being will change under the influence of various outside factors. Dean of Antai College of Economics & Management, Professor Wang Fanghua introduced that the workout of the China’s Urban Consumer Price Index adopts 800 fixed samples from 40 cities together with other 1200 random samples. It maintains the academic independence by entrusting professional organizations to conduct the telephone survey.
