Recently, RUC Vice President Chen Yulu sent a letter to Prof. Hollander, Vice President of University of Leipzig, extending his congratulations on the great honor of “2009 Confucius Institutes of the Year” won by the Confucius Institute co-organized by Renmin University and University of Leipzig.

At present, a total of 282 Confucius Institutes and 272 Confucius Classrooms have been established in 88 countries and regions all over the world, among which 20 Confucius Institutes were granted “2009 Confucius Institutes of the Year” in honor of their excellent performance.

Confucius Institutes, as non-profit education organizations, provide Chinese language and culture teaching and organize activities related to China. The Confucius Institute (CI) at University of Leipzig was co-established by University of Leipzig and Renmin University of China on April 9th, 2008. Prof. Lai Zhijin of RUC German Department is appointed as the Associate Director of CI at Leipzig. Except for offering various Chinese language courses, CI at Leipzig also held a series of abundant activities in 2009 such as high-level academic lectures, Chinese Art Exhibition, “Chinese-Bridge German Middle School Students Summer Camp” and so on.

In 2010, the CI at Leipzig plans to hold more activities, such as Confucius Culture Week and Confucius Culture Tour Exhibitions, and continues to organize compilation of localized Chinese textbooks and training of Chinese teachers. RUC will continuously support its 12 CIs in the New Year, and set up a special channel on RUC website to report updates of each Confucius Institute.
