Chairman of the University Council, Attends the Cross-Strait University Summit in Macao
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Macao's return to China, Chairman of the RUC University Council Prof. Cheng Tianquan attended the Cross-Strait University Summit in Macao at the invitation of Prof. Zhao Wei, President of University of Macau, from Dec. 19th to 21st, 2009.
Chinese President Hu Jintao attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new campus of University of Macau on Hengqin Island in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, on Dec.20th, 2009. Prof. Cheng Tianquan, as the honored guest of University of Macau, witnessed the historic moment at the ceremony.
The Cross-strait University Summit was organized by the Macao SAR Government and held by University of Macau on Dec. 21st. Heads of over 20 famous universities from China mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan gathered at the University of Macau to exchange views on four themes, namely “building world-class universities”, “developing high-calibre faculty teams”, “undergraduate education underpins a university’s development” and “cultivating university spirit and nurturing outstanding graduates”. Prof. Cheng Tianquan was invited to chair the “developing high-calibre faculty teams” session and delivered a speech titled “Building a First-Rate Faculty Team for Improving the University’s Essential Competitiveness”. He shared the successful experience of RUC in the terms of faculty team, discipline construction, cultivation of outstanding graduates, campus construction, and universities’ strategic plan, and especially mentioned Renmin’s achievements in the national ranking of disciplines officially released by Chinese Ministry of Education.
During the visit in Macao, Prof. Cheng Tianquan met with Mr. Ma Youli extending the great appreciation of his concern and support to the development of Renmin University. Prof. Cheng also met with RUC alumni including Ms. Gao Yan, Deputy Director of the Central People's Government's Liaison Office in the Macao SAR, and Mr. Liu Xiaohang, Director of the Department of Education and Culture of the Liaison Office. Prof. Cheng introduced the recent development of RUC to the alumni and conveyed the gratitude for their long-term support to their Alma Mater. Representatives of RUC Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office also joined the visit.
