PhD Candidate Got His Paper Published in “Optics Express”

Recently, Miao Peng, PhD candidate from Research Team on Laser Speckle Imaging of Neural Engineering Laboratory, School of Life Science & Biotechnology got his research paper titled “Random process estimator for laser speckle imaging of cerebral blood flow”published in “Optics Express”, the top magazine in optical field.

Non-invasive technology for laser speckle imaging of cerebral blood flow with high temporal and spatial resolution has always been the hot and difficult point in cranial science research. This paper established a complement theory on random process, explained the characteristics of laser speckle of cerebral blood flow under the non-steady-state condition and broke the restriction of the traditional theory to be effective only in steady-state process. Based on the new theory, the paper put forward a new random process estimator and applied it to the research on the non-steady-state cerebral blood flow imaging of hind limb functional stimulus eliciting in rats, and obtained the functional diagram of blood flow change with high temporal and spatial resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio. This study has opened a new chapter for the application of laser speckle imaging technology in functional imaging under non-steady-state conditions. Tang Shan, the corresponding author of this paper, is the research fellow of Med-X Institute, and partners are Li Nan and Professor Nitish Thakor from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at University of Johns Hopkins.Research Team on Laser Speckle Imaging of Neural Engineering Laboratory was established in 2005, and has published papers in “Optics Express”, “IEEE TBME”, “IEEE TNSRE”and other journals. Its research results have got wide attention from the international peers in optical imaging and biomedical imaging.
