International Education Cooperation of SJTU Assists in Cultivating Innovative Talents

From the press conference held today at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, it has been learned that UM-SJTU Joint Institute will have its first batch of graduates who have been significantly affected in scientific research, character, capability and other aspects by the international education model.

UM-SJTU Joint Institute is the international education organization co-built by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and University of Michigan. With three training styles of four-year international undergraduate program, dual-bachelor-degree program and BS-MS program, it aims to cultivate innovative and leading talents, and shows a high autonomy in aspects of education philosophy, teaching management, teacher appointment and operation mechanism.

Dean of UM-SJTU Joint Institute, Ni Jun introduced that teachers and students of UM-SJTU Joint Institute have access to world-class teachers, educational philosophy, teaching methods. As a result, students have received comprehensive development in all aspects.

"Domestic education lays more stress on training students’ inductive ability and the ability to solve problems instead of the ability to perceive problems.” Ni Jun stated that Chinese students work much harder than American Students. In the dual-bachelor-degree program, the average performance of students who went to the United States for exchange education in 2008 and 2009 was higher than that of the US university. “Chinese students have great potential in different aspects and we are eager to explore these abilities in the training.”

Yin Jie, Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Municipal Education, said that it has been a major highlight in Shanghai education to carry out cooperative education between universities in Shanghai and world-renowned universities, which has placed universities, students and the city in an international atmosphere.
